Symptoms

A healthy vine wilts suddenly; sawdust-like frass at the base and a mushy hole in the stem.

When it shows up

Early to midsummer when the clear-winged moth lays eggs at the stem base.

Jun Jul

Treatment

Slit the stem, remove the borer, and bury that node to re-root. Inject Bt into the stem early.

Prevention

Wrap stem bases in foil, plant a second succession in July, and grow resistant butternut types.
