Symptoms

Shoots that look scorched and bend into a "shepherds crook"; blackened blossoms and oozing cankers on branches.

When it shows up

Warm, wet weather during bloom.

May Jun

Treatment

Prune out strikes 12 inches below the damage in dry weather, sterilizing tools between cuts. Do not over-fertilize.

Prevention

Grow resistant varieties, avoid heavy nitrogen, and remove cankers in winter.
